In 2000, Carmela hired Marina as a live-in caretaker for her son but
was soon forced to clean, cook, iron, sweep and hand-wash clothes for
the entire household while taking care of her son at all hours. For
her labor, Marina was paid less than $3.00 per hour for working 6 days
a week.

Marina was also forced to sleep in Carmela's sewage-filled basement.
She had to use cardboard and pieces of wood to make planks for walking
across the basement floor. After 2 1/2 years under these conditions,
Carmela fired Marina without notice or pay.
