Science Fiction Writer Octavia Butler Dead at 58

Kazembe Balagun | According to Democracy Now, Butler "died on Friday night after a fall outside her home in Washington state. Her best-known work included "Parable of the Talents" and "Kindred." Butler was considered to be one of the first African-American women to break into the world of science fiction. Jane Jewell, of the Science Fiction and Fantasy Writers of America, said 'She is a world-class science fiction writer in her own right. She was one of the first and one of the best to discuss gender and race in science fiction.'"

In January 2006, the Indypendent interviewed Butler while she was on tour promoting Fledgling, her first novel in nearly a decade.

Winner of the Hugo Award for science fiction and a MacArthur Genius Fellowship, Butler’s fiction bends the boundaries of race and gender, while focusing on the problems of pollution, the legacy of slavery, and racism. more...  7 Comments

Randall's Island Development Fuled by Giuliani Donors

Emerson | We have had the opportunity to review the 80 plus pages of the Draft Waterpark Concession Agreement between the Department of Parks and Recreation and Randall’s Island Aquatic Leisure, LLC and our concerns have only been magnified. It is clear from legislation and court precedent that this Draft Agreement if implemented in its current size and form would assuredly meet the definition of “alienating” park land. Hence, much more legislative involvement will be necessary to move forward. anFurthermore, the Randall's Island Aquatic Leisure LLC is a currently non-existent shell company, with no track record or office space, created soley for this initiative and perhaps to thwart investigation into the track records of its principals and possible association with felons, which would certainly scuttle the deal.

We do know that, from the 2001 Giuliani Administration press release announcing this scheme that is led by the Aquatic Development Group. Why they couldn’t be named on a Draft Agreement should be cause for serious concern and further scrutiny than is provided for in the timeframe currently adhered to by the current Administration. more...  2 Comments

On communities within government

Jason Gooljar | Reading about the abuse that the Mexican people have endured from neoliberal policies in maqiladora factories you wonder if there is any hope at all left. For those who do not know, a "maqiladora" is a factory that assembles imported US parts then sends them back to the US. It is truly disgusting, that is the only word I have for such a device devised by greedy capitalist pigs. more...  0 Comments
