Author Naomi Wolf Warns of Fascism in America.

Alex Kane | Fascism is coming to America. This is the overarching message of Naomi Wolf’s new book, The End of America: A Letter of Warning To A Young Patriot. Naomi Wolf came to the Barnes and Noble on 22nd Street and 6th Ave. to promote this book, and she has been promoting it for the last month. Wolf, an American author and activist whose claim to fame was the
feminist book The Beauty Myth, argues that there are ten definitive steps that governments take in order to turn their society into a fascist one. These ten steps, argues Wolf, are occurring right here in
America, under the administration of George W. Bush. more...  13 Comments

Prayer Vigil for Homeless Hate Crime Victim

Picture the Homeless via Nightwalker | Dear Friends and Family,

On Friday, a homeless man named Felix Najera who was sleeping on the sidewalk on 103rd St. between Park and Lexington in East Harlem was set on fire and suffered burns over 78% of his body in the latest local example of a disturbing nationwide trend of brutal hate crimes against people who are homeless.

Please see below for a press release issued jointly by the office of East Harlem City Council Member Melissa Mark-Viverito and Picture the Homeless. In addition, we hope you will join us this Friday night, October 12, starting at 6pm, as we hold an all-night vigil in East Harlem - to pray for Felix, to vow that all life be respected, and to commit to ending the misguided policies that contribute to and exacerbate homelessness.

Thank you,

Leaders and Staff

U.S. Democrats Still Weak and Useless!

Peter Stern | U.S. Democrats Still Weak and Useless!
The Bush administration's policies, goals, objectives and direction will remain an American staple for many years.

While both houses of the U.S. Congress have slight Democrat majorities, they are not sufficient to change the Bush administration's foreign and domestic policies --- even if the Democratic Party wanted to make any changes.

Without a 2/3 majority, Bush may still veto any bill or resolution without any retribution. Hence, the Democrats can NOT override successfully ANY Bush veto.

In other words, without such a majority and a real commitment from the Democratic Party, American citizens will remain deep within the muck and corruption of the current administration's haphazard direction for many years to come and our grandchildren will continue to pay the bulk in lost lives, freedoms and tax dollars for our poor judgment.

Second Set of Disappearances Continue

Ted Stein | If extraordinary renditions were the sanitized words used to describe the first set of disappearances, transfer and repatriation are the sanitized words being used to describe the second set of disappearances. Yesterday, the Department of Defense 'transferred' eight more prisoners from Guantanamo to governments where torture and indefinite detentions are common. more...  0 Comments

NYC, the NYPD, the RNC, and Me: Fortress NYC

Nick Turse | Since then, the city's security forces have eagerly embraced an Escape From New York-aesthetic -- an urge to turn Manhattan into a walled-in fortress island under high-tech government surveillance, guarded by heavily armed security forces, with helicopters perpetually overhead. Beginning in Harlem in 2006, near the site of two new luxury condos, the NYPD set up a moveable "two-story booth tower, called Sky Watch," that gave an "officer sitting inside a better vantage point from which to monitor the area." The Panopticon-like structure -- originally used by hunters to shoot quarry from overhead and now also utilized by the Department of Homeland Security along the Mexican border -- was outfitted with black-tinted windows, a spotlight, sensors, and four to five cameras. Now, five Sky Watch towers are in service, rotating in and out of various neighborhoods. more...  11 Comments

The initial protest of two hundred people started at 12 PM in front of the Burmese Mission to the UN, and was then moved to right outside the United Nations on 47th and 1st Avenue. The latter part of the protest lasted till about 6 PM. Given that the protest was for the whole day, snacks and water were on hand for the demonstrators.
