El Puente Needs Your Support

El Puentista | On Friday; October 6th, the EI Puente Academy for Peace and Justice, our nationally celebrated, public high school was summarily evicted from its home of 13 years by edict of the New York City Department of Education (DOE). Citing their "sudden" awareness of worsening building conditions (the same conditions that drove el Puente for years to demand DOE support), the DOE dangerously and disrespectfully removed the Academy's operations to M.S. 50 literally overnight, without any prior consultation with the students, parents, administrators or teachers of either school community. Such an impulsive and autocratic maneuver makes a mockery of EI Puente Academy's early support of the more autonomous, DOE "Empowerment Zone" as well as EI Puente's good faith engagement with DOE in a publicly private partnership, uniquely endorsed unanimously in a Board resolution by the NYC Board of Education. more...  2 Comments
