Movement for Justice in El Barrio | In October of 2007, people from 26 social justice
groups from around the region gathered in our East Harlem
community for the first-ever historic “NYC Encuentro for Dignity and Against Gentrification.” We invited groups from around
the city who are fighting against gentrification from
the ground up to come share who they are, what
problems they face, who or what is their enemy and
what are their dreams. This film tells the story of
what was said.

DEFEND THE FREIGHTLINER 5! - Solidarity Meeting March 29th |
THE FREIGHTLINER 5—Robert Whiteside, Allen Bradley, Franklin Torrence, Glenna Swinford and David Crisco—are members of the negotiating committee of United Auto Workers Local 3520 in Cleveland, NC. They were fired by Freightliner in April 2007 after leading a walkout when management broke off negotiations without extending the union contract. The importance of a victory in this struggle is magnified due to the historic weakness of the U.S. labor movement in the South. Join us in the spirit of solidarity with these dedicated and heroic trade unionists as they seek justice. more...  0 Comments

Friendly Feudalism: The Tibet Myth by Michael Parenti

forwarded by Skinny John | This background piece denounces the Chinese occupation of Tibet and the atrocities committed by the Chinese government against the people of Tibet, documents the history of excesses of the current and previous Dalai Lamas and other Tibetan elitists, including the CIA connections of the current Dalai Lama and other Tibetan elitists dating back to the 1950s, and warns of impending disaster for Chinese-occupied Tibet and for China as well, as China's capitalist police-state oligarchy continues on its path of economic, social, and environmental self-destruction in both nations. more...  5 Comments

Paul Krugman | When the feds do bail out the financial system, what will they do to ensure that they aren't also bailing out the people who got us into this mess?
Bondholders must take a haricut. The stock options of executives who got rich playing heads I win tails you lose must be cancelled. more...  0 Comments

Trafficking racket: Indian workers file case against US employer

solidarity | Sometime in 2006, hundreds of welders and pipefitters, mostly from Kerala, responded to a series of advertisement placed by a recruiting company run by Mumbai-based Sachin Dewan promising green cards and permanent residency in US. Over 600 workers from all around India and some from the Gulf paid Dewan up to Rs 10 lakh (about $ 25,000 in today’s rates), often selling their homes and raising loans, for the promised "American dream". When they arrived in US, they discovered that there were no green cards. Instead, the workers found themselves working for Signal International, a major marine construction company, on ten-month "H-2B’’ visa that bonded them to work for it. more...  1 Comments

Sharing the Economic Pain

Bob Herbert | Now that the economic crunch is reaching those near the top of the pyramid, there is finally a sense that the US is facing a real crisis. The dream is in great danger because the ruling elite stopped looking out for the collective interests of society and all but stopped investing in the future. Economic growth depends on the level of investment in both physical capital and human capital. more...  1 Comments

SPUSA Labor Commission | The American Axle Corporation has attempted to reduce wages to $14/hour from $23/hour and cut retiree pension benefits. An almost 40% wage decrease is intolerable under any circumstances, but in a time of financial surplus - when American Axle is able to pay a hefty dividend to its shareholders it is simply unconscionable. more...  0 Comments
