Obama calls for US attack on Pakistan in warmongering address

David Walsh | In a transparent effort to bolster his reputation for toughness on national security issues and outflank his main rivals on the right for the 2008 Democratic Party presidential nomination, Senator Barack Obama of Illinois delivered a bellicose speech August 1 at a Washington think tank.

Speaking to the Woodrow Wilson International Center for Scholars, Obama called for more troops to be sent to Afghanistan, threatened unilateral attacks against Pakistan and pledged to strengthen the US military and intelligence apparatus.

The High Social Cost of Low Corporate Taxes

Workers International League - Portland | It is now taken for granted that social services in the U.S. will be under-funded – if they are funded at all. This isn’t because average people think that such things are unimportant, but because we’ve been taught by “our” representatives in government that even a miniscule social safety net is economically impossible (it is never explained why – it just is). As this approach continues to dominate mainstream political life, the living standards of working people everywhere are being destroyed, and the meager reforms politicians have always promised us have devolved into even tinier crumbs and counter-reforms. Indeed, reforms that benefit the working class seem to be impossible in Washington now-a-days, precisely at a time when the wealth of the country has never been greater. To make sense out of such irrationality, one has to consider that this issue isn’t limited to the 50 states of the U.S. – it’s an international problem, and its cause is no accident. more...  0 Comments

Spitzer Vetos Reforms to Welfare to Work Program

Hunger Action Network | New York has one of the weakest welfare to work programs in the country, ranked 47th in the country by the federal government. Counties refuse to provide training or education to welfare participants until "they get a job," but they fail to follow up with the participants once they find a job. The result is that hardly anyone leaving welfare is escaping poverty. State lawmakers passed a bill to try to get NYC and the counties to pay attention to trying to find living wage jobs. The state media and welfare officials all attacked the measure however. more...  0 Comments

Association of Southeast Asian Nation (ASEAN) Hype

Dr. Carol P. Araullo | The press releases churned out of the 40th Ministerial Meeting of the Association of South East Asian Nations (ASEAN) and the annual ASEAN Regional Forum (ARF) this week gives the impression ASEAN is well on the way to becoming a formidable economic bloc and a force to reckon with in the geopolitical landscape. This self-congratulatory stance was exemplified by the braggadocio in the keynote speech of de facto Philippine President Gloria Macapagal-Arroyo, that the lofty vision of an “ASEAN community” is achievable by the year 2015, and not the official target of 2020. more...  0 Comments
