MK Britton | Times Square erupted into celebration after Barack Obama was declared President-elect. Thousands gathered to show their support, crying and dancing and hugging one another. Police tried to control the crowd's exuberant revelry to little effect; people easily made their way past the barricades and onto the streets, blocking traffic and engaging drivers in the celebration. more... 3 Comments
MK Britton | A parade beginning in Bedford-Stuyvesant, Brooklyn ends up in Union Square. Organized by Julian Barrett and Kyra Raskin, the parade was the result of only a few days of planning and was publicized via Facebook and e-mail lists. A 130 x 65 foot flag was procured by an e-mail correspondent. The flag, an impressive effort of several people over the course of a week, provided a centerpiece for the Union Square gathering. Dancers, musicians, and Obama supporters collected underneath the flag in celebration of the election. more... 6 Comments

Coounterhegemonic | McCain’s insistent fear-mongering about Obama’s economic plan to “spread the wealth around” reflected a desperate campaign searching for a message that would tap into the assumed racial fears of whites. John Tarleton | Long before Bush-bashing became commonplace, radicals were speaking out from Day One and protesting against the policies of the most reactionary administration in modern U.S. history. Now, after eight long years, America stands on the verge of electing a charismatic, highly intelligent, moderate-to-liberal African-American president. So, who doesn’t want to party even if there are many reasons to be wary of Obama’s agenda and the people who are backing him?

Michael Fox | Democracy is not something that happens once every four years when you go vote for President, Senator, governor or congressman. It should be an every day act. We can no longer leave important local, regional or national decisions in the hands of our elected representatives alone. hey should be held accountable, not to their campaign contributors, but to the citizens who they are supposed to represent. So when we go vote tomorrow, we should not only consider which of the candidates is going to best represent us, but which candidate will be willing to fulfill this commitment and open up the greatest amount of dialogue with the voters. Which candidate will allow him/herself to be held accountable? Which candidate will pass power to the American people?
