Adalah-NY | One day before the Hebron Fund's controversial fundraising dinner at the New York Mets' Citi Field, a coalition of civil rights and peace organizations released new details about extremist statements by individuals associated with the Hebron Fund, and about its fundraising for illegal purposes. The statements were made by Yossi Baumol, the Executive Director of the Hebron Fund, Rabbi Dov Lior, the Chief Rabbi of the Jewish settlers in Hebron, and Noam Arnon, an honoree at the upcoming dinner. Other examples of racist, violent and illegal activities supported by the Hebron Fund were included in a November 3rd letter to the Mets.

New Yorkers Tell Baseball Commish: 'Strike Out Israeli Settlements!'

Adalah-NY | Over fifty human rights advocates gathered outside the office of Major League Baseball Commissioner Bud Selig in midtown Manhattan at lunch time today to demand that he prevent the New York Mets from hosting a Citi Field fundraiser for a Jewish group that supports violence and racism against Palestinians. The protest came two weeks after eleven organizations sent a letter to the Mets and Commissioner Selig asking them to cancel the event for the Hebron Fund at the Caesars Club, which is located directly above the Jackie Robinson Rotunda at Citi Field. The groups said that the event would “taint” the Mets and Major League Baseball’s commitment to diversity and equality, and insult the memory of Jackie Robinson.

MOWING DOWN LABOR AT CENTRAL PAK

CMer | Events related to the change in the operating lease for central park "Tavern on the Green" clearly illustrates the dangerous course that the privatization of public space and its gentrification is taking, with outsourcing and franchising taking control at the expense of the common person and his or her rights. In Central Park, the labor rights of workers are being mowed down by a powerful, privileged and connected few. more...  0 Comments

Glad I Ran

Rev. Billy Talen | One part of our city is at war with the rest of us, and tries to normalize this violence with thousands of hours of family-friendly images of happy leaders. But we still have the basics of free speech, the immanence of gestures and language in our bodies. That’s why the police study us so hard – we are considered incendiary in our flesh. We could do anything. And in fact, gatherings of people in their physical form in public space – that is how history’s change has always arrived.

The Heckler

Rev. Billy Talen | Three weeks to go to the election. Last night I interrupted Mike Bloomberg’s opening statement in the debate. Three words into his first sentence I stood up, inhaled, and let out a preacher’s wail, the summit of years of loud practice. My words must have been whole. Every person on stage was frozen in an open-mouthed snapshot of surprise.

Venezuelan president meets with New York unionists

Hugo and General Joe | "Washington's plans in South America have failed, said the Venezuelan president. He told the workers that capitalism has failed and that while the Soviet Union fell apart, it was never a threat. The U.S. and European powers were the threat. "They fought against socialism," he said and pointed out that since its inception, the Soviet Union had gone through many wars and that "socialism got lost along the way."

"Imperialism fought against the workers' dream of building a new world," he said, "but "the only way to save the world is socialism. Obama talks change, change, change. Tell me how, within the framework of capitalism?"

Once the Soviet Union was gone, Chávez said, "The neoliberals were able to impose themselves." Neoliberal proposals became stronger and "the free market has messed everything up. What is labor flexibility for them becomes hungry children." more...  0 Comments

At a Brooklyn Town Hall Powerpoint Trumps Democracy

Kristin Schall | The limiting of the conversation, even in the name of civility, is certainly counter to the concept of town hall meetings. What are these politicians afraid of? Conservative disrupters? Not too many of those in the crowd on this night. More likely. they fear that the will of their constituents will force them to fight for a single-payer system, despite the wishes of corporate lobbyists and campaign contributers. more...  0 Comments
