In the name of "ABB:" Liberal left "fights the right" by chasing after it

Roy Rollin | No one, in his or her right mind, would assert that the main contradiction in American politics today is between Republicans and Democrats. Rather it is between the bi-partisan war party and a majority of Americans who oppose the war but lack a political outlet to express their opposition to it. The politics of "lesser evilism" pursued by the mainstream liberal left under the guise of "Anybody But Bush" (ABB) bears no small share of the responsibility for this for this sad state of affairs. Because the liberal left has helped co-opt any and every mass movement into the dead-end of Democratic Party politics, the antiwar movement, which put millions of people into the streets, doesn't have a single representative in any elected body in the U.S. and is dependent on the whims of pro-war politicians and the "swing state" voters that supposedly support them. more...  0 Comments

The vegan threat to homeland security

Pam's House Blend (repost) | "We believe that spying on American citizens for no good reason is fundamentally un-American, that it's not the place of the goverment or the best use of resources to spy on its own citizens and we want it to stop. We want the spies in our government to pack their bags, close up their notebooks, take their cameras home and not engage in the spying anymore."

Excerpts: Climate Expert Says NASA Tried to Silence Him

pat n |

The fight between Dr. Hansen and administration officials echoes other recent disputes. At climate laboratories of the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration, for example, many scientists who routinely took calls from reporters five years ago can now do so only if the interview is approved by administration officials in Washington, and then only if a public affairs officer is present or on the phone.

Alito: Time to Take a Stand

Dave Lindorff | Political posturing, tactics, and considerations about the public reaction to their actions are out of line. Democrats, and principled Republicans in the Senate need to oppose Alito’s nomination to the high court as a matter of simple survival of constitutional government. Simply put, Alito thinks Congress is a vestigial irrelevance. more...  1 Comments

NSA, FISA, and the "Missing 3 Paragraphs"

Chris Anderson | "The fact that the most controversial portions of the Baker testimony are missing from the published official record naturally invites suspicion," Aftergood wrote. "But there may be a benign explanation. We're trying to find out."

In the last week, revelations that the Bush Administration itself opposed legislative changes to the 1978 FISA statue-- changes that would have lowered the legal bar for warrantless eavesdropping of non-US Citizens inside the United States-- have shaken the foundations of the administration's robust defense of its domestic spying program. Now, it appears that the three most controversial paragraphs of DOJ Lawyer James A. Baker's 2002 testimony to the Senate Committee on Intelligence on the legislation-- paragraphs in which Baker wrote that "the Administration at this time is not prepared to support [changes to FISA]" have disappeared from the official record of the July 2002 hearing. more...  2 Comments

Judge Alito, Jesus, Homosexuality, Abortion and Privacy

aCitizen | The "religious" right REALLY wants Judge Sam Alito on the Supreme Court. But why? How might Judge Sam help advance their agenda? How does the right's agenda compare with that of fascist regimes--in particular, Hitler's? And do you know what Jesus of Nazareth actually SAID about two of the "religious" right's hot-button issues?
