Quixote Center/Quest for Peace | For twenty-five years United States policy toward Nicaragua has been directed by two goals: working against Sandinista efforts to hold or retain power, and forcing free market ideology on the country in the form of trade agreements and harsh loan conditions from USAID, the World Bank, IMF and other institutions. This is not the policy of the people of the United States, and we need to make that clear. more... 1 Comments

Kaitlyn Tikkun | Just weeks, before one of the largest LGBT Pride celebration weekends in the United States is held, The New York City Police Department and the City of New York are attempting to deny sound and march permit applications for the 2nd Annual Trans Day of Action for Social and Economic Justice.

Dave Lindorff | Guess who’s coming to dinner? The President of the United States. But for the U.S. media, this peculiar party crashing by President Bush was a Big Moment, not an embarrassment.

Reid | Thank you for your article (link below) on Howard and particularly for highlighting his disregard for Australian youth. I am appalled by his attitude to young Australians. Australia has one of the highest youth suicide rates in the developed world and little wonder; the short-term interests of corporate profit, crushing taxation laws and the introduction of ‘guest workers’ have stolen the future from the majority of our youth. Our youth now experience ever-increasing difficulty obtaining work skills needed for their survival. more... 0 Comments

Fred Bergen | Only the working class is positioned to end the Iraq war. The reserve of opposition ot the war and willingness to fight it is growing, not weakening. The cynical reformists who count the declining numbers trend at their rallies and marches are only measuring the last gasps of the initial protest strategy, that oriented to the middle class and the Democratic party. The majority of workers in the US who are fed up with the war are looking for a way to end it, not Saturday afternoon speeches about how horrible the war is. more... 7 Comments
Tom Good | New York, NY - George W. Bush is speaking at the 2006 commencement at the United States Merchant Marine Academy in Kings Point, NY on the morning of June 19. Join Students for a Democratic Society and friends in confronting Bush's criminal acts in Iraq and Afghanistan. The recent revelations of atrocities in Haditha and Ishaqi and elsewhere clearly reveal the barbarity of the US Government's actions. In an effort to end the US war crimes, stop the use of torture and eliminate "pre-emptive" invasions, SDS New York City is calling for a nonviolent protest at the Vickery (Main) Gate of the USMMA at 10:00 AM on Monday, June 19, 2006. more... 9 Comments
the guild | The National Lawyers Guild condemns the FBI's Operation Backfire "green scare" tactics as an unconstitutional abuse of authority. The FBI has engaged in an orchestrated campaign of issuing subpoenas to environmental activists, conducting large scale roundups of activists, levying unprecedented penalties for property crimes, and using threats of severe sanctions to leverage fear of conviction and force individuals to turn state's evidence. more... 0 Comments
finn | It’s not difficult to arrive at an accurate assessment of the present Oz leadership, the government of John Howard. Love Howard or not, he has the local population eating his lies like it was manna from heaven. Howard’s treasurer recently announced that the Oz government was out of debt, in view of a national foreign debt of $493 billion, the highest ever recorded by an astronomical ‘mile’, the announcement of no government debt becomes meaningless double-talk. But which figure does the public prefer to embrace? The lie of course, it’s far more comforting – the media’s emphasis on the treasurer’s remarks at the expense of the horrendous crippling debt is not unintentional. more... 0 Comments

Gabriel Riocabo | The Department of Homeland Security’s recent recent decision to cut New York’s federal counter-terrorism funding by $140 million might actually be a blessing in disguise. Since the start of the Iraq War in 2003, the NYPD has relied entirely on federal money to fund Operation Atlas, a highly militarized police program in which heavily armed police officers (known as Hercules teams) are deployed randomly throughout the city.|| The Indypendent more... 2 Comments
John Tarleton | Thirty-seven antiwar activists were arrested and dozens more were pepper sprayed, tazered and shot at with rubber bullets outside the Port of Olympia, Washington during 10 days of demonstrations at the end of May that sought to disrupt the shipment of Stryker urban combat vehicles (see sidebar) to Iraq. The protests marked the first time that Americans have tried to block the shipment of war materials since April 2003.
Bennett Baumer | “Phony demolitions” are the latest rabbit landlords are pulling from their hats to evict rent-regulated tenants from their affordable apartments. Exploiting a loophole in the rent-stabilization law, landlords doing “gut renovations” of apartments are claiming that they are demolishing buildings, although they are leaving the roof, walls, and in many cases entire floors intact.
Bennett Baumer | Tenant advocates want to restore home rule (self-government) over rent and eviction laws to New York City so it can address the affordable housing crisis. The city government has not been able to strengthen rent controls or tenant protections since 1971, when the state Urstadt law was enacted. Part of then-Gov. Nelson Rockefeller’s disastrous and short-lived elimination of rent controls on vacant apartments, the law barred local governments from imposing rent or eviction regulations stronger than the state’s.
