Crossing the Line: Cops Gone Wild in Bed-Stuy

Nicholas Powers | On June 10, I watched police tackle a man with dreadlocks on Nostrand Avenue. He was handcuffed amid an angry crowd. I parked my car and jumped out looking for answers. My reporter’s notepad flashed in my hand, it is my shield and mirror, protecting me from commitment to a side while reflecting the consequences of those who take one. more...  0 Comments

What links Lieberman, McCain, Gingrich, Perle, Kristol, and Hoffa?

NonNeocon | Senators Joe Lieberman and John McCain aren't merely "hawkish"; as "Honorary Co-Chairmen" of a pre-Iraq-war spin machine called The Committee for the Liberation of Iraq, they were leading cheerleaders for a war that now threatens to mushroom out of all control--unless we remove the Liebermans, McCains, and their fellow war cheerleaders from our U.S. Congress.

The Queens Blackout: The Brutal Human Costs of Con Ed’s Drive For Profit

By Bill Van Auken | More than a week after Con Edison’s aging infrastructure buckled under the impact of a heat wave, plunging residents of a large swathe of New York City’s borough of Queens into darkness and sweltering heat, at least 10,000 people remained without electric power Monday.

At its peak, the blackout affected more than 100,000 people in the predominantly working class neighborhoods of Astoria, Woodside, Sunnyside, Long Island City and Hunters Point. Most of them were left without electricity for a full week. Families were forced to throw out their food and were left with no means to light or cool their homes. The aged and the sick were subjected to intense suffering. Small businesses, including many restaurants and food stores, suffered crippling losses. more...  1 Comments

Hawkins, Green Party US Senate candidate, called for a national oil company to buy from Venzuela.

Howie Hawkins | Howie Hawkins, the Green Party candidate for US Senate from New York, called today for the creation of a national oil company to help protect American consumers against the rapidly escalating price hikes for gasoline. Hawkins said that the national oil company would take advantage of the offer by the Venezuelan government to sell oil at only $50 a barrel for the next 200 years, well below the current world price of around $70 a barrel. $50 a barrel means about $2 a gallon at the gas pump. “We must break the Big Oil’s monopoly control of our energy supplies. ExxonMobil and the other oil giants rejected the Venezuelan offer. A national oil company would serve as a New Deal style yardstick corporation whose competition would prevent Big Oil from gouging consumers. The national oil company would go into the international market and, for the first time, offer the OPEC countries a selling outlet in the US other than the multinational oil giants,” Hawkins said. more...  3 Comments

The Telenovela Continues: Much Drama and Confusion in the Wake of Mexican Election

Kari Lydersen | “The US wants (conservative Felipe) Calderon to win, so he will win,” laughed the owner of a mountain bike rental outfit in the same city, adding that he didn’t want populist candidate Andres Manuel Lopez Obrador to triumph because “he’s crazy” and “he’s just like (Venezuelan president Hugo) Chavez.”

These sentiments were common refrains in the lead-up and aftermath of Mexico’s July 2 presidential elections. The final vote tabulation showed conservative PAN candidate Calderon beating populist PRD candidate Lopez Obrador by 0.6 percent (35.88 percent to 35.31), with only 244,000 votes out of 41 million cast separating them. A final ruling from the country’s supreme electoral council (called TRIFE or TEPJF) will be announced by September 6. Lopez Obrador’s camp is calling for a complete recount of the ballots, a move which it is unclear whether the TRIFE is legally authorized to make without annulling and re-doing the election. more...  0 Comments

NO Deportations, NO Border Walls, NO Minutemen

No One Is Illegal (NOISI) Coalition | ******Please forward widely**********

PLEASE CALL: 347.537.3433

11 am, July 26
City Hall Park
Corner of Murray St and Broadway

From there, we will march to the corner of Church and Liberty Sts to rally with other pro-immigrant organizations.

Minutemen founder Jim Gilchrist is coming to "Ground Zero" to link his war on immigrants to the rhetoric around a "War on Terror" used to justify US military intervention in Afghanistan and Iraq, and the arrest, frequent torture, and deportation without charges of masses of Arab and Muslim immigrants in this country.
While the Minutemen portray themselves as a tolerant group concerned only with border security, they are in fact and armed militia group that seeks to recruit members on the basis of racist lies, such as Gilchrist's claim that "20 % of southern border-crossers are known criminals, drug dealers, sex
traffickers, and gang lords.' Gilchrist is a member of the openly white supremacist Council of Conservative Citizens, and ex-leader of the Minutemen James Chase wrote to him in 2005 that ""You have murderers in your ranks. You have Nazis, other anti-Jews, and anti-Hispanic racists side by side with you."
Neither the Minutemen Project nor the "War on Terror" (and its domestic agent, the ICE) have anything to do with security, let alone concern for those who died on 9/11/2001. Both stir up racist hatred to turn attention away from the real causes of instability in the lives of working people in this country.

In reality, immigrant labor contributes to the US economy and an increase in jobs rather than "stealing jobs", while the US military remains, in the words of Martin Luther King, by far "the greatest purveyor of violence" in the world today.

Democrats, Republicans line up to back Israeli war crimes

Joe Kay | Last week, both the US House of Representatives and Senate overwhelmingly passed resolutions praising the Bush administration for its full support of Israel’s military campaign in Lebanon. Democrats joined with Republicans to endorse Israel’s bombing campaign, which has led to the deaths of hundreds of civilians.
The House resolution passed by a vote of 410-8 on July 20, while the Senate passed its resolution by unanimous consent on July 18. On Sunday, leading Democrats, including Senate Foreign Relations Committee member Chris Dodd and the minority leader of the House Intelligence Committee, Jane Harman, reiterated their support for Israel’s assault on Lebanon.
The congressional resolutions place full responsibility for the current violence in the Middle East on Hamas and Hezbollah. The House resolution denounces them for “engaging in unprovoked and reprehensible armed attacks against Israel.” The organizations are condemned for “continuing to indiscriminately target Israeli civilian populations with their rockets and missiles.” more...  3 Comments

Dancing is Not a Crime

Jessie Carpenter | Protestors gathered outside Mayor Bloomberg's house on Saturday afternoon to put a stop to cabaret laws. Cabaret laws control where New Yorkers are allowed to dance. In 1929 New York City took control of where people were permitted to dance in an effort to control interracial integration. Today only 244 restaurants, clubs and bars have a cabaret license, those without a license can be fined thousands and even shut down if they permit dancing within their doors. more...  25 Comments

The Shame of Being An American

By PAUL CRAIG ROBERTS | Do you know that Israel is engaged in ethnic cleansing in southern Lebanon? Israel has ordered all the villagers to clear out. Israel then destroys their homes and murders the fleeing villagers. That way there is no one to come back and nothing to which to return, making it easier for Israel to grab the territory, just as Israel has been stealing Palestine from the Palestinians. more...  1 Comments
