The May 13, 1985 MOVE Bombing: Suicide or State-sanctioned Murder?

Kevin Price / | "If you look close enough you can see history altered before your eyes. Pick up the latest Guinness Book of World Records, flip to page 123 and you will see what I mean. Under the section 'Cults, Fans and Followers' the police bombing of the MOVE Organization in 1985 is listed as the sixth most deadly mass suicide in recent history…. Yes, you did read that correctly. A deliberate massacre, in which police dropped a bomb on a house, intentionally allowed the fire to burn and shot at those that dared attempt an escape, was labeled as mass suicide," writes MOVE supporter Kevin Price in his recent essay "MOVE's Battle With Guinness."

Price's essay follows a recent Philadelphia Inquirer interview with Ramona Africa, the sole adult survivor of the May 13, 1985 police assault. MOVE has confronted Guinness and is asking people to sign a petition in protest.

Past Philly IMC coverage has documented the long history of media bias towards MOVE, the upcoming Parole Hearings for the remaing MOVE prisoners, interviews with Ramona Africa in 2002 & 2003, and demonstrations in Philadelphia(1, 2). A recent documentary about MOVE (narrated by Howard Zinn) can be viewed online, as well as NBC 10 archival footage.

Mapuche child from the Temucuicui community gunned down by Chilean police

news about mapuches | Mapuche child from the Temucuicui community gunned down by Chilean police

Public Declaration - Santiago, 30th October 2007

The group named 'Memoria Indigena' (Indigenous Memory) have released the following declaration for the knowledge of the national and international community.

Prior to the violent raid that was carried out around 13.00 today, Tuesday 30th October, in the Mapuche community of Temucuicui, by the institution of Armed Police of Chile, where the minor of 10 years old, Patricio Queipul Millanao, was arterially wounded by the bullets that they cowardly and indiscriminately fired straight at the boy's body.

The minor was admitted to Sapu de Ercilla at 17.15 today, with multiple injuries to his thorax, legs and hands, according to the statement that the doctor that treated him in the Sapu de Ercilla made to a human rights organisation that communicated from France at 19.30 today. The doctor sent the minor to the Hospital de Victoria to verify the seriousness of his injuries. He remains under there care.

We are making an urgent call of solidarity with our brothers and sisters to be ready to denounce these unbelievable facts against our brothers and sisters, and to declare themselves against these violations of human rights that are carried out systematically against the Mapuche people by the Chilean State and its institutions.

This piece of news is still in the process of development, a fact that we must be aware of. This call is to all the Mapuche organisations, and especially non-Mapuche organisations to raise their voices in defense of life.

We send from our group all the support and solidarity to our brothers and sisters from the Temucuicui Community, in this time of pain and repression that they are suffering at the hand of the repressive and oppressive Chilean State and we raise our voices in defence of the just demands of the People of the Mapuche Nation.

New acts of repression in Oaxaca

dfense([general.translatedby]) | The URO government is up to its old tricks again. This morning some of
the comrades from VOCAL called to tell us about a new wave of repression
against the demonstration today, November 2, the anniversary of last
year’s victory against the PFP. At this moment (6:00 p. m. central
Mexico time) the situation is not clear. It’s possible that one person
is dead, but the information has not been confirmed. This morning 70
people were arrested, including our comrade, the painter Nicéforo
Urbieta. Luckily, he was released, but we don’t know how many people are
still held prisoner or if there are disappeared people. more...  0 Comments
