Worker Freedom | Students walked out en mass from Garfield (NJ) High School today, demonstrating in support of teachers who have been working without a contract since June. The student action, triggered by a fire alarm around 9 a.m., came a day after 350 teachers called out sick in an apparent protest over the contracts stalemate, prompting the district to closed schools. more... 2 Comments

Dalton | The Interfaith Refugee Action Team–Elizabeth (“IRATE” for short) held its regular ash Wednesday vigil on Feb. 6 outside of the Elizabeth Detention center, a privately run prison that confines refugees while their cases are pending. More than 150 participants from New York, Pennsylvania and New Jersey Gathered at the prison for prayers and song, and received the traditional marking of ash on their foreheads. Groups represented included Pax Christi, the National Association of Social Workers, the New York New Sanctuary Movement, Sojourners Prison Visitation Project, the Haitian Solidarity Network of the Northeast, the May 1 Coalition, the Globe & Port Coalition, and at least a dozen churches and faith-based communities. more... 0 Comments

Resistance and Solidarity | On May 1, 2007, NJ resident Tyler Froatz showed up at the May 1 immigrant rally in DC. He brought a carload of guns and was arrested after threatening to shoot immigrants. He was charged with 20 weapons violations, but on Feb 27 plea bargained this down to 4 charges, and lawyers believe he will get a suspended sentence.
