NAFCON | Approximately 100 parade marchers from the National Alliance for Filipino Concerns (NAFCON) and BAYAN USA were met with repetitive harassment by the New York Police Department (NYPD) and security forces of the Philippine Independence Day Celebration (PIDC) Committee last Sunday during the annual Philippine Independence Day Parade. The joint contingent was projecting issues of the rice crisis in the Philippines and protesting the local commercialization of the annual Philippine Independence Day parade and fair along Madison Avenue. Constant harassment from the NYPD, in connivance with the PIDC organizing committee and Philippine Consulate, ended with the arrest of two members of the Filipino community fraternity, Kapatirang Pilipino, or Kappa Pi.

Karen O'Keefe | Today, a TV ad began airing featuring a quadriplegic from Kingston, urging the state Senate to pass a bill allowing the doctor-advised, medical use of marijuana. Several patients traveled to Albany to talk to the press and to lobby senators. Among them was Barbara Jackson, a great-grandmother from the Bronx who survived cancer and was arrested last year for using marijuana to treat her dangerous appetite loss.
Weekly News Update | The United Food and Commercial Workers (UFCW) has been trying to organize the Postville plant and had sought to prevent a raid there. In a May 2 letter to ICE officials, UFCW international vice president Mark Lauritsen notified the agency of an ongoing labor dispute at the Agriprocessors plant in Postville, and said he was concerned that any potential ICE action could have a "chilling effect" on the existing work force. more... 2 Comments
