BAILOUT THE FILIPINO WORLD WAR II VETERANS, NOT THE CAPITALIST CROOKS!

AJLPP | Good news! The US Congress extended their sessions for the next two weeks because the bailout bill was defeated in the lower house. For us this will a new window of opportunity to pass the SB 1315 with recognition and restored benefits for our WWI veterans. The next two weeks Sept 30-OCT 10, 2008 WILL BE CRUCIAL because the joint Congress conference committee will decide how to reconcile the two disparate bills- SB 1315 and HR 6897 that gives nothing to the Filipino veterans.

PASS SB 1315 WITH RESTORED BENEFITS, NO TO LUMP SUM /QUIT CLAIM BILL

Echo Park Community Coalition (EPCC) | The House of Represntatives give false hope to the Filipino Veterans. In a session this past week, the House of Representatives have passed both the House version of SB 1315 and HR 6897, both relating to veteran benefits. However, the passage of both bills contain many layers that we may have overlooked.

For example, when SB 1315 was passed in the Senate this past April, some were quick to fold their tents and stopped their advocacy for the veterans, and failed to realize the bill must still pass a vote in the House of Representatives and even the President if it would not get the 2/3 majority approval needed in this vote.

After five months of promises, the lower house finally put the House version of SB 1315 to vote. It passed, but without section 4, which would have recognized the Filipino veterans as American war veterans and given them benefits.

In that same session, the lower hosue passed HR 6897, awarding a lump sum for the Filipino vets ($15,000 for US cititzens; $9,000 for non-US citizens). However, this bill serves as a quit claim bill, in which the act of accepting this lump sum signifies the Filipino veterans' release to any claim they can make to the United States for their services to the country. Even more, this depends on when they can find the appropriate funds for this bill because the lower house has passed it without the proper funds to support it. more...  0 Comments

MEDIA TERRORISM IN THE PHILIPPINES

E. SAN JUAN, Jr. | Supported by the Bush administration and the Pentagon, the fascist Arroyo regime continues its scarcely covert policy of extra-judicial murders and "forced disappearances" of anyone critical of the government and local politicians allied with the oppressive oligarchy. Under cover of the "war on terrorism," the neocolonial Arroyo state continues to violate the human rights of women, workers, peasants, lawyers, priests, students, teachers, artists, writers and media workers in order to preserve the rule of a privileged few, the elite oligarchy of landlords, compradors and bureaucrat-capitalists, linked to global corporate capital. How long will this barbaric and brutal rule continue with the help of US citizens' tax dollars? more...  0 Comments
