Direct Action for Katrina Survivors

Eviction Defense | On Monday, February 13th, the New Orleans homeless population will skyrocket, and the survivors of Katrina will be victimized again. FEMA's short-term hotel program expires for most of the 26,000 displaced hurricane survivors and most of these evacuees have not been provided with long-term, or even transitional housing solutions. The National Guard is even on call to evict these survivors at gun point. more...  0 Comments

Nothing to Kill or Die For

Mahir Ali, Z Net | At the start of this week, the death toll stood at three and the situation seemed likely to deteriorate, even as commentators throughout Europe tried to hose down suggestions that what we have been witnessing is a clash of civilizations. It is harder to allay the impression that it is a clash of cultures, exacerbated by inordinate degrees of obduracy on both sides.

NYC Critical Mass Legal Update: Funds for Appeals and Letters of Support Needed!

Critical Mass Defendant | Since the 2004 RNC, the NYPD has arrested over 300 bicyclists during Critical Mass bike rides. Remembering Al Lewis: 1923-2006

Anonymous | "I've been in the struggle over seventy years -- it doesn't bother me I may not win," Grandpa Al Lewis said in a cantankerous, wide-ranging 1997 interview with The Shadow. "The victory is in the struggle, for me. And I accepted that a long time ago."

On Friday, the 95- (or 82) year old Lewis passed away. Best known as "Grandpa Munster" for his role in a television sitcom, Lewis was a social justice fighter going back to labor and tenant struggles during the Great Depression. In recent years, he was a Green Party gubernatorial candidate and the host of a weekly radio show on WBAI-99.5 FM. Do you have any personal memories of "Grandpa"? Feel free to share them here.

Today, Democracy Now! reported that "Grandpa Al" was 82, not 95 as he always claimed. Does the difference matter with regard to Grandpa Al's legacy?
