NYC "A Day Without Immigrants," mid-rally observations

N Whelan | I arrived at Union Square around 2pm. Turnout looked low at that point and I wondered if maybe the police hadn’t overestimated the crowds, what with their ubiquitous paddy-wagon presence. There were about a few hundred people milling about, blowing whistles and waving flags. It seemed not all the immigrants took the day off, as an enterprising few pushed carts through and hocked those infernal whistles, and flags of every color and stripe.... more...  0 Comments

Global Nonviolent Resistance Demands End the Torture, End the Occupation

Danny Malec | Today, in commemoration of International Workers Day, peacemakers and nonviolent activists from around the world engaged in nonviolent civil resistance to highlight the interconnectedness between the ongoing foreign occupation of Iraq and workers’ struggle for justice around the world. In this war, like all wars, the brunt of the cost -- both human and financial -- is disproportionately felt by the poor and working classes all over the world. In the current debate over immigration, it is important to continue making the connection with the failures of US foreign policy (which lead to greater challenges domestically), of which the Iraq war and invasion are prime examples. The stark reality for immigrants, most of whom are themselves political and economic refugees of US foreign policy, is just another example of the shortsightedness and ultimate failure of decades of US warmongering and international interventionism, of which torture has been a key component. more...  0 Comments

How I Helped Organize a Shutdown for May Day

Anonymous | I didn’t wake up Saturday morning thinking that I was going to organize a shut down. I didn’t even ask that first question expecting much of an answer. I just had nothing to talk about at that moment and was curious. But hearing that it was really important to the kitchen staff and that they would do it if they felt like they had support was all we needed to want to participate. more...  13 Comments
