Faith Groups Urge NYS to Enact Health Care for All

Mark Dunlea | A coalition of faith leaders today called upon the New York State to provide health care for all New York residents.
The groups are participating in the national Cover the Uninsured Week ( http://covertheuninsured.org/). Nearly 46 million Americans – and 3 million New Yorkers - are living without health insurance, including more than 8 million children. They are forced to gamble every day that they won't get sick or injured. Uninsured Americans live sicker and die younger than those with health insurance. A new survey by the Commonwealth Fund found that 41 percent of nonelderly American adults with incomes between $20,000 and $40,000 a year were without health insurance for all or part of 2005. That's up from 28 percent as recently as 2001. Many of the uninsured reported spending their entire savings on health care and/or that they were having difficulty paying for basic necessities.

The groups urged the Legislature to create a State Commission on Health Care Coverage to do a cost-benefit analysis of all the ways the State could provide health care coverage to all residents. On Tuesday, the Commission bill (A6575) was voted unanimously out of the Assembly Health Committee. Senator Marchi (S4928) is sponsoring a similar commission bill. Half a dozen states have already initiated such a process. Massachusetts recently joined Maine in enacting a program intended to provide universal health care coverage. more...  0 Comments

Philippines: Agrarian violence claims more lives under Gloria Macapagal Arroyo Regime

Laban ng Masa (Fight of the Masses) | Agrarian violence claimed two more lives this month. A leader of Task Force Mapalad (TFM), Rico Adeva, 39, was gunned down by three men as he and his wife Nenita were walking to their home in Barangay Dos Hermanas, Silay City, Negros Occidental on Black Saturday. He suffered seven bullet wounds – in the head, stomach, chest, and hand. Meanwhile, in Davao, the Secretary General of the National Coordination of Autonomous Local Rural People’s Organizations (UNORKA), Eric Cabanit, was assassinated by two masked men while he was in a public market in Panabo last April 24, 2006. His daughter, who was with him when the shooting happened, was also wounded and is still in critical condition.
