Julie Devaney | I thought the sacred principles of the anti-capitalist movement were about fighting oppression. Remember, sexism, racism, homophobia, ableism? I was taught rather brashly by a series of postings on New York City Indymedia that in fact, the most untouchable of heroes is Morgan Spurlock, director and star of the anti-McDonalds flick, Supersize Me. more... 19 Comments

Anonymous | On Friday I received a phone call from a good friend who works at CBS - I've known her for years and she is a Producer for some of the news programs, one well known one in particular. She tipped me off that the news media is in a "lock-down" and that there is to be no TV coverage of the real problems with voting on Nov. 2nd. She said similar "lock-down orders" had come down last year after the invasion of Iraq, but this is far worse - far scarier. more... 4 Comments

The Experience | FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE Name: The Experience Address: 4181 Park Avenue, Bronx NY 10457 Telephone: 718-312-2850 Website: www.cometoexperience.com Email: firstname.lastname@example.org Bronx, NY – 5 November, 2004 What’s the point of life? The Experience, a new church located off Park Avenue and East Tremont, will address this question and others in its first service. This service, to be held on Saturday, November 13th at 7:00 P.M., heralds a new change in the way that NYC residents experience spirituality. All too often, young professionals, newlyweds and college students feel disenfranchised by traditional, staunchly religious and liturgy-based communities of worship. Fortunately, The Experience is not your typical church. Offering a welcome alternative for those people who would like to exercise their faith and spirituality differently from their parents, this church offers a new way to communicate the universal truths of millennia-old Gospel to a new and spiritually hungry generation. This laid-back church will offer a milieu of interactive events that promise to bring a new and much-needed edge to worship. Services may include open discussions, poetry readings, spoken word, drama and concerts. Events are interactive and preaching is practical and applicable to the ever-changing needs of the city. In addition, The Experience promises to be a wealth of support for the Bronx. Consistent with its philosophy on developing a loving and welcoming community, members of the church will also serve the community in a spirit of kindness through many special projects that include beautifying neighborhoods and simply giving back to the surrounding community. For members of The Experience, this new church offers a life-changing way of accepting and applying spirituality to one’s life. Thankfully, The Experience offers a safe haven for members to discuss, celebrate and even question their faith in a welcoming and loving environment. In addition, The Experience will offer free spiritual counseling, helping many young people to battle and rise above the day-to-day stresses that can affect their lives and spirituality in a negative way. In explaining just how the church will bring spiritual joy to new parishioners, The Experience Pastor Loammi Diaz says, “We are living in a city where change is inevitable, and I believe the method for exposing the Gospel has to change according to the times. Our people are real, and we desire to form a loving, laid back and life-changing community.†True to its name, The Experience offers a new way to experience one’s faith. Offering open discussions, poetry readings and concerts, The Experience promises to become the premier place of worship for young people interested in an alternative way to exercise their faith. As Pastor Loammi Diaz says, “This will definitely be more than just a typical church: it will be a spiritual experience.†The Experience will hold its first service on Saturday, November 13th at 7:00 P.M.; subsequent services will be held the second Saturday of each month at 7:00 P.M. Stop by The Experience at 4181 Park Avenue in the Bronx, or call 718.312.2850 for more information. You can also visit their website at www.cometoexperience.com. more... 2 Comments

Jeff Mackler | (from the Open Newswire): Almost 17 weeks after some dozen federal government prosecutors had begun their marathon presentation charging progressive New York attorney Lynne Stewart with aiding and abetting terrorism, Stewart finally took the witness stand in her own defense.
On Oct. 25, before a packed courtroom of her supporters and a myriad of attorneys who were similarly outraged at Stewart’s persecution—ordered by U.S. Attorney General John Ashcroft—her defense counsel, Michael Tigar, methodically queried Stewart to expose the fraud of the “evidence†against her. In four days, shortened by technical and procedural delays, Stewart effectively tore apart and reduced to ridicule every aspect of the government’s frame-up.more... 7 Comments
