Protest FRIDAY at Brazilian Consulate

Mitchel Cohen (and others) | Four days after US nun Dorothy Stang was killed in the Brazilian Amazon on order of landowners angered by her support for rural workers, Military Police in Goiás state attacked an encampment of urban landless in the city of Goiania, killing at least two squatters and arresting more than 800, including a reporter for New York Indymedia. While Stang's murder garnered wide press attention in the US, the bloody Feb. 16 Goiania assault has been largely ignored by the US media, though it captured headlines in Brazil. more...  0 Comments

Sat 3/5 Protect Undocumented Immigrants' Rights to Have Drivers Licenses

spread it | On Saturday, March 5, at 12:00 pm there will be a march to defend immigrants' rights. The march, is sponsored by Centro Hispano Cuzcatlan, Desis Rising Up and Moving, New Immigrant Community Empowerment, the Queens Committee, and an organization that belongs to the Tenement Museum's Immigrant Programs Advisory Committee, the New York Civic Participation Project. The goal of the march is to send a message to Governor Pataki and other political representatives that: 1) the attack on the right of undocumented immigrants to hold licenses is a civil rights and immigrant worker rights issue; 2) there should be one license for all drivers; 3) the Department of Motor Vehicles should not act as immigration enforcement; and 4) that undocumented workers should not be pushed underground. The march will assemble at Junction Boulevard and 37th Avenue in Queens; the marchers will proceed along 37th Avenue to rally at Hart Park on 69th Street. To get to the start of the march, take the 7 train to Junction Blvd, Queens. Participants are encouraged to bring whistles, drums, and/or noise makers.
