Fear and Hatred in the Apple

Mumia Abu-Jamal | Leave it to the notorious New York Post to use the t-shirt to depict Al-Montaser as "The Intifada Principal" (in a headline), who apparently is calling for "a Gaza-style uprising in the Big Apple."

It is beyond irony that a school named for one of the most revered Arab writers, who, with several of his countrymen spent long years in the U.S., should become the focus of so much fear and hatred. more...  0 Comments

The Terror of Waiting (Indy Archive, 9/13/2001)

Gwen Owens | As I waited for him to return my call, I opened the door, wanting desperately to connect with anybody walking by, to tell them what had happened, as if that would take away some of my fear. It was quiet outside and really bright. People were walking by, at a normal pace as if they were going to work. I wanted to ask them if they knew the tower had collapsed, as if it had only happened to me personally. I needed to connect and to share this profound sense of grief that was rapidly overtaking me. more...  0 Comments

We Need Real Security (Indy Archive, 9/13/2001)

A.K. Gupta | We’ll be called on to rally around the flag and president in the coming days, and support whatever retribution is carried out. Our security would be better enhanced by using this time of grief and mourning to reconsider our position in the world and use reason – not bombs – to solve our problems. more...  0 Comments

Rising Hatred (Indy Archive, 9/13/2001)

Heather Haddon | Disturbing is a word that barely describes the September 11 bombing for most New Yorkers. But it is the word Mohammed Abdur Rahman, an Arab-American resident of Queens, uses to describe death threats left on his Islamic Center’s answering machine.

“1 hope you have fun with Satan and in eternal hell fire for a thousand millenniums because that is where you’re going to be,” said the first of two messages left just hours after the Tower building fell. more...  0 Comments

How Should We Respond (Indy Archive, 9/13/2001)

Mike Burke | Wouldn’t fighting terror with terror propel the nation, and indeed the world, into a war where there may be no winners?

Peace advocates throughout the nation have called on the Bush Administration to avoid unilateral retaliation. But their message has been largely silenced in the name of patriotism. more...  1 Comments

Aftershocks (Indy Archive, 9/13/2001)

Indypendent | New York and the nation are in mourning. Families are desperately going from hospital to morgue, searching for information about missing loved ones after the World Trade Center bombings.

The mood is one of anger mixed with anxiety. Impromptu vigils were held earlier Wednesday evening at Union Square Park and Washington Square. Calls for revenge are growing. more...  0 Comments

Naomi Klein Launches New Book, 'The Shock Doctrine,' in NYC

Shocking! | Klein exposes how moments of collective crisis—9/11, the tsunami, or Hurricane Katrina for example—have been used as opportunities for rapid-fire corporate raids on societies reeling from shock. She calls this phenomenon disaster capitalism. In contrast to the popular myth of this movement’s peaceful global victory, Klein shows how it has exploited moments of shock and extreme violence in order to implement its economic policies in so many parts of the world—from Chile to Russia, China to Iraq, South Africa to Canada. Often a refusal to comply results in distinctly more corporeal shocks: the shock of torture. Pinochet’s Chile and Guantánamo Bay are just two examples. more...  8 Comments

Updated: Upcoming Dialogues on Immigration

Jane Guskin and David Wilson | Have you heard an anti-immigrant argument that you feel is wrong, but need the facts to contest? (For example: "Immigrants are a drain on socialservices.") Do you have your own fear or concern about the issue? (For example: "Are the lowest-paid US-born workers really hurt by immigration?") Bring these arguments and
concerns to a dialogue, and we'll work together to develop responses using facts, rational reasoning and personal
experiences. more...  0 Comments

The Indypendent: An Interview with NY Taxi Workers Alliance Leader Bhairavi Desai

John Tarleton | New York taxi drivers have been speaking out for months against new city regulations that require all taxis to have new technology installed including credit card machines and global positioning systems that will track where the cabbies drive. Faced with an October 1 deadline to make the switchover, thousands of cabbies pulled their vehicles off the streets Wednesday and Thursday in the first citywide taxi strike in nine years. With the strike winding down on Thursday night, New York Taxi Workers Alliance Executive Director Bhairavi Desai spoke with The Indypendent about what was accomplished, how her group pulled off the strike and what they might be ready to do next. ||Previous coverage in The Indypendent more...  5 Comments
