New Yorker: Rumsfeld Ordered Prison Abuse

Seymour Hersh | He's completely fucked. ------- The roots of the Abu Ghraib prison scandal lie not in the criminal inclinations of a few Army reservists but in a decision, approved last year by Secretary of Defense Donald Rumsfeld, to expand a highly secret operation, which had been focussed on the hunt for Al Qaeda, to the interrogation of prisoners in Iraq. Rumsfeld’s decision embittered the American intelligence community, damaged the effectiveness of élite combat units, and hurt America’s prospects in the war on terror. more...  10 Comments

Brown Versus Board of Ed., Fifty Years On

Indypendent / Colorlines | This week, accompanied by much media hype, Americans are looking back at the 50th anniversary of the Brown v. Board of Ed. decision that sought to integrate American schools.

In this weeks Indypendent, Victor Goode writes that, "In many ways [Brown] was more successful at ending segregation in public life than it was in changing our schools ... While over these 50 years Brown has been critiqued from as many different directions as the geometric facets of a snowflake, today it remains a cornerstone of our legal culture, but one whose relevance for the next decade is in serious doubt. " [Read More]

Issues of race, class, and integration still trouble America, including the American left. Just this last week, an article on urban gentrification posted to NYC Indymedia generated tremendous reader feedback.

More discussion of the impact of Brown can be accessed at Colorlines, from which the Goode article is excerpted.

"Self-defense" is a right and a responsibility

G. Lewis | Below are two articles I feel are an important contribution to the current situation in this country. I am a firm believer, due to real-deal, living personal experience with the agents of repression, in the right to defend oneself from harm. Don’t get it twisted: I’m NOT down with political adventurism, random attacks on people I disagree with politically, or public posturing with loaded weapons. But I also see that the progressive community is woefully unprepared for the increasing repression coming from the government and its right-wing allies; mostly due to its general unwillingness to face the issue realistically, practice good strategy, and promote self-preservation; especially amongst the youth. Remember, “freedom” is only a concern of the living! The Jacksonville Anarchist Black Cross teaches and advocates armed self-defense. I personally teach and advocate unarmed self-defense. Feel free to contact Jacksonville ABC (jaxabcf@attbi.com) or myself (gregoryclewis@yahoo.com) for more info. more...  2 Comments
