Former Timesman: The NYT's Apology is as Phony as Their Reporting

Donald Paneth | The New York Times’ “apology” in regard to its reporting prior to the second Iraq war is as faulty and fraudulent as its reporting was. The very idea of an apology is dishonest, like the reporting. more...  0 Comments

Indypendent May 26: Indy Hits 50

Chris Anderson | Critics of the inaugural edition of the New York City Independent Media Center paper, the 4-page, black-and-white Unst8ed, didn’t pull many punches. “The masthead needs work,” read notes from a staff review meeting in September 2000. “In general, layout is confusing,” writes another volunteer. “Articles were crammed together,” the notes continue, “and we had issues with ‘news reporting’ versus propaganda. For the future, we should figure out how to manage information better.” Fifty issues and almost four years later, Unst8ed is now The Indypendent, a sixteen-page, full-color biweekly. more...  0 Comments

Indypendent May 26: Hard Times in Little Pakistan

Sarah Stuteville | Visit Coney Island Avenue in Midwood on a Friday afternoon and you’d hardly know this is a community recovering from crisis. But despite the seeming normalcy in Brooklyn’s “Little Pakistan,” signs of trouble lie just below the surface. Two blown-up photographs adorn the doorway of Punjab Sweets: one portrays the Islamic holy city of Medina, the other the World Trade Center. An NYPD patrol car is parked outside Makki Mosque surveying the services, and a building with mirrored windows labeled “Immigration Services” in large block letters is across the street... more...  0 Comments

Indypendent May 26: Freddys Fights Back

Tracy Norton | The mood is light and Dylan is in the air, but no one forgets the reason they are really here: to protest Bruce Ratner’s plan to level the neighborhood for a basketball arena, high-rises and retail chain stores. Freddy’s is just one of the many neighborhood buildings on Ratner’s “to be demolished” list. According to Freddy’s manager Donald O’Finn, the bar stands in the way of an escalator Ratner hopes to have in one of his skyscrapers. more...  1 Comments

Indypendent 5/26: Third World Activists Challenge Police Restrictions, Discuss RNC

Jed Brandt | It seems as if it’s getting harder and harder to protest. First the government stopped listening and now they’re trying to make sure no one else gets to hear – through tightly controlling and denying permits to assemble. But some community organizations aren’t taking police threats and government obstruction as the end of the story. more...  4 Comments

Indypendent May 26: Harsh Measures Aimed At Nonviolent Protesters As RNC Skirmishes Begin

Jackson Allers | After a precedent-brekaing move by the New York Supreme Court that allows the use of previously sealed court documents in the trials of participants in a March 2003 die-in, some are raising questions and concerns about the intentions of the DA's office and what activists can expect during and after the upcoming Republican National Convention this summer. more...  0 Comments

Rise Up Radio Pulls Out the Stops Tonight, 7-9 p.m.

John Tarleton | Can listening to a radio pledgedrive be enjoyable? Yes, if you turn it over to Rise Up Radio. The only youth activism show on WBAI-99.5 FM is pulling out the stops tonight from 7-9 p.m. The Antibalas Afrobeat Orchestra will be performing pieces from their new unreleased album “Who Is This America” live for an in-studio listening party. Youth activists from more than 20 grassroots organizations around the city will be on hand to also talk about their summer plans. Deepa Fernades and Jackson Allers of Free Speech Radio News will be emceeing all the outrageous fun. Rise Up (originally Student Voices for Peace) went on the air two years ago and has been a fresh gust of wind blowing through the station. Unfortunately, they are still buried in a Friday morning timeslot that makes the show inaccessible to many youth. They need a prime time weeknight slot. WBAI’s spring pledge drive is a not going well. Tonight’s the chance for the youth to show what they can really do if given a chance to spread their wings. || more...  3 Comments
