Tracy Norton / Indypendent | Developer Bruce Ratner wants to net the New Jersey Nets, and his $300 million bid for the professional basketball team leaves no doubt of just how serious he is about the acquisition. Should he succeed, Mr. Ratner has plans to "revitalize" downtown Brooklyn. But opposition is gathering quickly too, and the use of eminent domain to condemn land for private use is a major point of contention. Ratner’s claim that only about 100 people would be displaced by the project is being disputed by the Prospect Heights Action Coalition. The coalition estimates that the number of displaced neighbors is much closer to 850. The New York City IMC will host a three-part reporting workshop series from 2-5 p.m. on Saturdays Feb. 7, 14 and 21. Over the course of the three sessions, participants will work with staffers from our award-winning, bi-weekly newspaper, The Indypendent, as well as producers from Democracy Now. Limited spaces are available. If you are interested please fill out our application.

We will also be hosting the first of several PGP encryption workshops on Saturday January 31. On Feb. 1, we will be hosting an open house at our 29th St. office 4-6 p.m. for people who want to come down and find out how to get involved with our various working groups (print, photo, audio, video and tech). Afterwards, we will be screening a movie. The next issue of The Indypendent comes out on Tuesday February 3.
