War & Peace
William Hughes | As a result of the Bush-Cheney Gang’s insane “Surge” strategy, 1,300 Maryland Nation Guard members will be deployed to the hell hole that is Iraq. On May 3, 2007, in Baltimore, a rally was held to protest that action. Maryland State Del. Jill P. Carter blasted U.S. Senators Barbara Mikulski and Ben Cardin for funding the war and then saying that they wanted to “protect the troops.” She called that bizarre conduct: “politically schizophrenic.” more... 0 Comments

Margot Kassmann | In the Bible, justice is always measured in the well-being of the weakest. Freedom could be understood as bond to community, not egomania. People arenot commodities or a mass. ThinkPeace | If Nancy Pelosi and Congress really want the war to end and U.S. personnel to leave Iraq, it doesn't have to cost $100 billion or even $10 billion. For just $450 million, Congress could hire U.S. airlines to fly all U.S. troops (and contractors) home for good, in time to enjoy summer with their families.

finn | A number of factors have recently formed a conjunction, which provided a new view of a popular ‘reality’. Whenever the flames of the terrorist ‘threat’ begin to wane convenient arrests are made that fan the embers back into flames of concern. Recent police raids in Sydney and Melbourne have resulted in the arrests of two Sri Lankan Tamils; “two men have appeared in the Melbourne Magistrates Court on terrorism related charges,” ran the intro from one media outlet while another ran with, “men face terrorism charges after raids.” I’m sure we all get the drift but it should be noted that assistant commissioner to the Federal Police, Frank Prendergast, went to lengths "to make it clear that these men weren't involved in any possible attacks on Australian soil.” Well then, what? more... 0 Comments
William Hughes | President George W. Bush now has the power, thanks to a mostly cowardly Congress, to declare “Martial Law!” The Defense Authorization Act of 2006 gave him the green light. All he needs is a Reichstag-like incident and our Republic will be history. Like the animals who were trapped in the La Brea Tar Pits in Los Angeles, it has been sinking for years. Author Chalmers Johnson is convinced the U.S. Empire is headed the way of Greece’s and Rome’s. more... 0 Comments

Two members of a Davao peasant group were shot dead and three others wounded in the southern Philippines, the media sources reported, Friday.

peptide | For reasons too numerous to cite, I weep as I write this piece. Today is the highly emotive, for Aussies and Kiwis, ANZAC day – a day of remembrance and commemoration for those who desperately seek a national identity in a modern alienated society. There is NOTHING whatsoever to glorify in War. WAR is the lowest form of human expression; those who glorify it deserve our unrelenting critical attention. Those who attempt to exploit highly emotive and largely mythologised events deserve to be questioned, what are their real intentions? more... 0 Comments

Relax | How can the U.S. Congress, despite testimony by the representative of the European Parliament, respond to CIA ops under Bush Administration using kidnapping and rendition in Europe, breaking Euro and U.S. laws, subversion of U.S. and Euro Democracy w/Delahunt's milquetoast "the people across the globe have admired our historical commitment to freedom and the rule of law. But they are appalled at our hypocrisy when we betray our values"? And the media just looks the other way! So much for the 4th estate! more... 2 Comments
Steven J. Smith | As I write these words, the war in Iraq continues, and the death toll mounts. Two American aircraft carriers sail the Persian Gulf.
