Mitch Prothero | "You can be a member of Hezbollah your entire life and never see a military wing fighter with a weapon," a Lebanese military intelligence official, now retired, once told me. "They do not come out with their masks off and never operate around people if they can avoid it. They're completely afraid of collaborators. They know this is what breaks the Palestinians -- no discipline and too much showing off." more... 0 Comments
Frida Berrigan and William D. Hartung | Much has been made in the U.S. media of the Syrian- and Iranian-origin weaponry used by Hezbollah in the escalating violence in Israel and Lebanon. Khalid Amayreh | On 23 March, 1944, 33 German soldiers were killed when members of an Italian resistance group set off a bomb close to a column of German troops who were marching on via Rasella. Adolph Hitler got furious and ordered that within 24 hours, ten Italians were to be shot for each dead German. Herbert Kappler, the local German commander, quickly compiled a list of 320 civilians who were to be killed. On 24 March, the victims were transported to Adreatine caves where they were summarily executed by the SS. more... 3 Comments
Gary Sudborough | Israel is committing similar crimes to those perpetrated on them and other occupied people during World War II. Collective punishment and bombing civilian infrastructrure are war crimes. The presence of oil in the Middle East and the US imperialists' desire to control it are exceedingly important not only to understanding the Iraq war, but also to understanding the war in Lebanon more... 0 Comments
A.K. Gupta | There would be no need for a U.S. military presence in the Middle East today if not for the oil. Israel’s role is to keep the Arab nations divided and eliminate any threat to its regional dominance. That’s what it did in ’67 against Egypt , in ’82 against Syria and in ’81 with the bombing of Iraq’s nuclear reactor. Israel’s history from 1948 also negates the myth of “Israel the victim.” With the exception of the ’73 war it has been the aggressor every time. more... 0 Comments
