Andrew | Yesterday, as I found myself deep in a sea of Williamsburg hipsters awaiting a "Pool Party" concert at East River State Park, a rather unexpected "special guest" was announced by an entirely too enthusiastic emcee for the artfully apathetic aesthetes who dared not display any sentiment beyond irony. I assumed maybe we'd be graced by some luminary of the scene (spending the last five years in Binghamton, NY prevents me from naming whom that might be).
JR | Climate justice and food justice activists rallied at the lecture of noted environmentalist and ecofeminist, Dr. Vandana Shiva, at Riverside Church today to clarify the responsibility of activists in the face of concerted pressure by pro-gas drilling industry and 'environmental' groups. Marcia Reynolds, whose family has been farming in upstate Otsego County for four generations pointed out the folly of movements that call for a moratorium on gas drilling, saying "I don’t want the drilling delayed while these companies keep buying up leases. Adalah-NY | As the MV Rachel Corrie, the second half of the Gaza Freedom Flotilla, was towed into the Israeli port of Ashdod after another attempt to break Israel's siege on Gaza, 100 New Yorkers marched through the streets of Manhattan, south of Union Square. Heeding the Palestinian civil society call for intensifying boycott and sanctions against Israel in the wake of this week's Freedom Flotilla massacre,the marchers chanted, sang songs and performed poetry outside three locations targeted for boycott. Industrial Workers of the World (NYC GMB) | The Industrial Workers of the World (IWW) branch here held a march and rally at Starbucks to call on the corporation to honor Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. on the federal holiday commemorating his birth. The Starbucks Workers Union of the IWW is demanding that Starbucks pay a holiday premium to baristas who work on MLK Day just as the Seattle-based chain does for five other federal holidays.
