WORLD AIDS DAY NYC Policy makers and service providers recommit to ending AIDS at the New York City vigil [QUINN PHOTO] From midnight to midnight on December 1st, the names of New Yorkers dead from AIDS pervaded the City Hall Park Plaza. A solitary voice spoke each name in the earliest hours. By sunrise, other mourners stood at a half circle of five podiums, reading the tens of thousands of names in discordant concert [LINK TO AUDIO FILE]. For the past twelve years, less than half of the time we’ve lived with this epidemic, Housing Works has lead this annual vigil in City Hall Park plaza. Thousands of New Yorkers- people living with HIV/AIDS, colleagues from sister organizations, policy makers and even those wandering through on their commutes and lunch breaks- participate.
