NEW YORK, NY (December 7, 2006) -- Time's Up! and Visual Resistance will hold a memorial ride and install a white 'ghost bike' this Saturday for Eric Ng. The ghost bike memorials—a bicycle painted white— are striking visual statements that the City has failed to keep cyclists safe. Eric is the 12th known cyclist to have been killed in NYC by a motor vehicle in 2006. He is also the 2nd cyclist hit and killed by a vehicle on the Hudson River Greenway this year.

Saturday’s memorial will be a chance for the activist and cycling community to come together to mourn the loss of one of their own and collectively share their anger and sadness summed up by a statement stenciled on Ng's ghost bike plaque: LOVE & RAGE.

Time's Up! calls for improved greenway safety and better law enforcement against all reckless drivers, especially those who breach the few car-free thoroughfares in the city. The laws are already in place, but seldom enforced. Improved infrastructure, including more physical barriers protecting bicycle paths and lanes from all cars and trucks, should be another high priority for the city in light of these cycling fatalities.

“The Hudson River bike path is a jewel for the cycling community. It’s the safest and most pleasant way to travel around the city and contributes to the increase in cycling. Cycling is up in New York City. Let’s keep the momentum going and defend this auto-free space.” says Bill DiPaola, director of Time’s Up!
